Over het museum

Newby Hall is a country house near Ripon in North Yorkshire, still the family home of the Compton family. The core of the house was built in the 1690s and is attributed to Sir Christopher Wren. In the late 18th century its owner William Weddell, who had returned from the Grand Tour with a large collection of classical sculpture, engaged the architect Robert Adam to redesign the interiors. John Carr of York had designed a new south wing, and Adam's greatest creation there is the Statue Gallery, a pair of square rooms with a central rotunda modelled on a Roman house, built to display Weddell's marbles.

Thomas Chippendale supplied furniture for the rooms. The Tapestry Room chairs are covered in fabric from the Gobelins factory in Paris, and the room is described as the most complete Chippendale interior in existence, while the Newby collection is one of the largest and most complete in private ownership. The house can be seen on one-hour guided tours of the ground and first floors.

The gardens, mostly created in the early 1920s, run down to the River Ure and include a double herbaceous border 172 metres long, the National Cornus collection and a series of compartment gardens. Until 1933 part of the grounds were a nine-hole golf course. Visitors also find a miniature railway that opened in 1971, an adventure playground, river boats and several family attractions, including a large private collection of dollshouses and a teddy bear house.
