Over het museum
Ripley Castle has been the home of the Ingilby family for more than 700 years. According to tradition the estate came to the family in 1308 or 1309, when Thomas Ingilby married the heiress Edeline Thwenge. The family badge, a boar's head, is linked to a later Thomas, who is said to have saved the king from a wild boar. A fortified gatehouse stands about 80 metres south of the main house and dates from about 1450, and a tower was added in the 16th century.
The family's history is bound up with the religious and political conflicts of the period. Members of the household were involved in Catholic resistance in the 1580s and 1590s, and Sir William Ingilby was arrested after the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and acquitted. After the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644, Oliver Cromwell is said to have stayed the night in the house, while Sir William hid in a priest hole and his sister Jane held Cromwell at gunpoint in the library.
The main house was largely rebuilt in the later 18th century, and the orangery and a garden temple were added at about the same time. The castle was listed Grade I in 1952. It stands in landscaped gardens and parkland with a lake and a deer park, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Visitors can take guided tours of the castle and walk in the gardens and grounds, and the estate also includes a village with a hotel, pub and tearoom.

The village is fairly level, although the market square is cobbled, and a tarmac road leads from Main Street to the castle gates. The castle terrace has a gravel surface that is not ideal for wheelchairs, and the gardens and grounds are reasonably level with stone paths. Most of the hothouses are not accessible, although visitors can pass through the Palm House to reach the grounds, and the park walk is not recommended for wheelchair users. No mobility scooters are available. Accessible toilets are at the main car park, the Boar's Head, the Tearoom and Grindhus. There are parking spaces near the Tearoom entrance, but blue badge holders must also pay.
