Over het museum

Geevor is a tin mine on the north coast of West Cornwall, in the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. Mining here dates back to at least the 1790s, and a company working under the Geevor name was formed in 1911 to combine three neighbouring mines. A shaft called Victory Shaft was begun in 1919 and was later deepened to about 480 metres, and in the 1960s and 1970s the company linked its workings to the old Levant mine under the sea bed.

A collapse in the world price of tin in 1985 brought the closure of the mine in 1986. Work restarted in 1988 but stopped again in 1990, and the underground pumps were switched off in 1991, allowing the mine to flood. Cornwall County Council then bought the site, and volunteers, mostly former miners, turned the old mine offices into a museum during the winter of 1992 to 1993. Geevor Tin Mine Heritage Centre opened in August 1993.

Since 2001 the site has been managed by the independent charity Pendeen Community Heritage. Heritage Lottery Fund and other grants of £3.4 million, awarded in 2007, paid for conservation of the mill and surface buildings and for a new Hard Rock Museum inside the former Top Fitting Shop. Visitors can also walk into the 18th-century Wheal Mexico mine, whose longer route opened in 2011. Geevor describes itself as one of the best industrial heritage attractions in the United Kingdom.

Geevor is a former working mine with uneven ground, but the Hard Rock Museum, shop and café are fully accessible, and the museum has a lift, an accessible toilet and room to move between the exhibits. A lift platform links the shop and café; its button is outside the platform, so a second person is needed to operate it. Three accessible toilets are in the reception building, the car park and the Hard Rock Museum, and Blue Badge parking is in front of the museum and outside the reception. A reduced-price surface ticket suits visitors with limited mobility or a shorter visit. An easy-read and large-print guide and map are available at reception, and the museum films have audio. Staff have had deaf and disability awareness training. Dogs are welcome except underground, and assistance dogs are welcome everywhere.
