Over het museum
Inverness Museum is the oldest museum in the Highland region and one of the oldest in the United Kingdom. Its earliest collections were assembled in 1825 by the Northern Institute, whose interests then ranged across natural history, archaeology and cultures from around the world. Around 1903 the focus shifted to displays of Highland and Jacobite history, partly to attract visitors to the area.
During the 1960s and 1980s most of the remaining exotic objects were transferred to the national museum in Edinburgh, now National Museums Scotland, and since then the museum has concentrated on telling the story of the Highlands. Its collections cover archaeology, social history, fine and applied art and a large photographic archive, with more than 300,000 items in total.
Today the building on Castle Wynd has two museum galleries, four spaces for changing art exhibitions, a community gallery and an activity room called Room to Discover. The museum is owned by The Highland Council and managed by High Life Highland, and it is an accredited museum.

Accessible toilets are available and assistance dogs are welcome. Detailed access guides are published on AccessAble and Euan’s Guide.
