Over het museum
The galleries on Vaughan Street were completed in 1901. Lady Augusta Mostyn, a supporter of the arts, saw that Llandudno needed a gallery and classroom space, and she ran the building as a creative and social centre until her death in 1912.
Over the next decades the building had many different uses. It was at various times a chemist, a grocery store, a furniture shop and a rifle club. During the First World War it served as a drill hall and housed Belgian refugees from 1914 to 1919, and in the Second World War it became a social space for American soldiers. From 1946 until 1979 it was a music shop.
After restoration, the Oriel Mostyn Gallery opened in August 1979 and showed exhibitions until a major extension and refurbishment gave the galleries their present form. The building combines an Edwardian red-brick façade, galleries from the early twentieth century and modern concrete, and its architecture has won awards, including the National Eisteddfod of Wales Gold Medal for Architecture and a RIBA award.
Today Mostyn is a public art gallery and registered charity. It has no permanent collection and runs a seasonal programme of contemporary art exhibitions. It also has a shop, a café and a studio and project space that can be hired.
