Over het museum
Paisley Museum was given to the town by the thread manufacturer Sir Peter Coats and opened in 1871 in a building designed by the Glasgow architect John Honeyman. It was built to hold collections about the town's world-famous shawl and thread industries, and it shares its building with Paisley Library and the Coats Observatory, Scotland's oldest public observatory.
Over the years the collection grew to include natural history, archaeology and Scottish art, as well as the Arbuthnott Missal, the only surviving pre-Reformation missal of the Scottish Use.
The museum closed for a large redevelopment that is the first major refurbishment in its 150-year history. The A-listed building and the observatory have been repaired and upgraded, and the project adds step-free access, lifts, a Changing Places toilet, a cafe, a shop, learning spaces and a heritage archive centre. Reopening has been delayed several times; in September 2026 it was announced for early 2027, with the fit-out due to finish before the end of 2026.
