Om museet
Sliedrecht is regarded as the cradle of the Dutch dredging industry. Small companies in the willow plantations of the Drechtstreek grew into firms that build harbors, shipping channels and new coastlines around the world. The Nationaal Baggermuseum traces this development from the first dredgers to today's large water engineering projects.
The museum's origins go back to a 1958 plan for a museum on the history of Sliedrecht and its dredging industry. In 1964 the Sliedrechts Museum opened in the former town hall. When it became too small, it was decided in 1971 to found a separate museum for dredging; the Nationaal Baggermuseum opened on June 23, 1973 on the Molendijk. In 1976 it moved to its current address, Molendijk 204, and it was expanded in 1978, 1982 and 1995. The house with the history of the Volker family is part of the tour.
Most of the collection consists of ship models in the permanent exhibitions, which show how dredging technology developed, along with historical photos from the bucket-chain dredger to the trailing suction hopper dredger, drawings, prints and found objects. In the museum garden stand large original parts, including a cutter head, a pump house with the impeller of the Vox Amalia (built in 2018) and a drag head from the Geopotes IX. The BaggerPraktijkTuin invites visitors to try out dredging techniques, and the library and archive are open to researchers. In 2026 the museum celebrates its 50th anniversary and is working on a new concept, "Lab Delta".
