Om museet
The history of the Innsbruck Nordkettenbahnen goes back a long way: the first Hungerburgbahn began operating as early as 1906, and in 1928 it was followed by the cable car designed by Franz Baumann from the Hungerburg up past the Seegrube to the Hafelekar. The valley station on the Hungerburg is a listed building from this pioneering era of alpine cable car architecture.
At the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007, the cable cars to the Seegrube and the Hafelekar were replaced by new installations, and at the end of 2007 the newly routed Hungerburgbahn with stations designed by Zaha Hadid went into operation. In 2010 the city of Innsbruck was awarded the Europa Nostra Award for the successful combination of historic buildings and modern architecture.
Since May 2011, "Das kleine Seilbahnmuseum" has commemorated this development. It uses the roughly 15-square-metre former ticket office of the Seegrubenbahn valley station, which is entered from the large waiting hall through a tunnel-like opening in the wall. Black sheet metal walls, targeted lighting and photographs on acrylic glass blocks organise the history of the railway into three themes: architecture, lifestyle and urban escape.
The museum is operated by the Innsbrucker Nordkettenbahnen; admission is free, and it is easy to combine with the wait for the onward journey.
