Om museet

The Heimathaus is housed in the Huthaus in Seefeld, built in 1724, right on Lake Attersee next to the lido. The building originally served as lodging and a common room for the wood wardens and woodcutters of the imperial-royal salt forests, who looked after the firewood used for salt production. The timber from the Attergau was first brought here across the lake on flat-bottomed barges.

In keeping with the building's function, the exhibition shows forestry, timber extraction and timber transport in the Attersee region. The central object is a painstakingly built movable model of the Hallholz lift in the Weißenbach valley. This installation was in operation from 1722 to 1871 and raised the timber into a higher water channel, from which it was floated via the Inner Weißenbach and the Traun to the Ebensee saltworks.

Numerous everyday objects from earlier times can also be seen. The Heimathaus is run by the Steinbach am Attersee local history association, whose members explain special rarities and their function during guided tours.
