Om museet

In the summer of 1893, Gustav Mahler spent his holidays for the first time with his siblings and friends at the inn "Zum Höllengebirge" in Steinbach am Attersee, today's Seehotel Föttinger. In order to work undisturbed and close to nature, in spring 1894 he had a small working hut built on the meadow by the lakeshore, which he jokingly called the "Schnützelputzhäusel": a single room with windows on three sides, a table, a chair, a stove and a baby grand piano.

Over four summers, half a dozen songs, the completion of the Second Symphony and the entire Third Symphony were written here. After disagreements with a new tenant, Mahler left Steinbach for good in late summer 1896. The hut then served for a long time as a wash house, a slaughterhouse and even as a lavatory – a use that at least saved it from decay.

On the initiative of Herta Blaukopf, the International Gustav Mahler Society and the Föttinger family set up a memorial in the restored hut in 1985. A permanent exhibition in German and English, designed scholarly by the society, tells of Mahler's life, his Attersee summers and the creation of the two symphonies. Around Mahler's birthday, the Gustav Mahler Festival Steinbach takes place every year, accompanied each time by a small special display.
