Om museet
The museum is located in the former farm outbuilding of Hof Deitmar. After the main farmhouse was rebuilt in 1913, a new stable and barn building had been erected there. In 1956 the city of Emsdetten bought the entire farm site, and in 1963 the local heritage collection moved from the main house into the ground floor of this building, which had been converted for museum use.
In 1989 the building was completely rebuilt, keeping the outer walls, and redesigned as a textile museum. In 1993 today's August-Holländer-Museum opened; it tells how the village of hand-weavers, shaped by agriculture and crafts, became an industrial town. Emsdetten was at times a center of jute processing, with up to 5,000 employees in more than 20 textile companies.
The exhibition covers home weaving, the working and living conditions of hand weavers, the founding of the textile factories in the second half of the 19th century, and the role of women in the textile industry, for example in the sack-sewing workshops. The upper floor shows life outside the factory: women's work, leisure, club life, and the development of the townscape up to Emsdetten's designation as a town in 1938. The museum is part of the Museumsinsel (museum island) around Hof Deitmar.
