Om museet
The Wannenmacher-Museum tells the story of a craft that shaped the economic life of Emsdetten for centuries. The Wannenmacher wove flat willow baskets, which were used in farming, among other things, for cleaning grain. The Prince-Bishop of Münster granted Emsdetten's craftsmen a monopoly, and guild regulations dating back to the 16th century governed the number of apprentices, the quality and the masterpiece. Around 1750, at the height of the trade, about half of the craft households lived from making wannen. Year after year, 25,000 to 30,000 pieces went as far as northwest Germany and the Netherlands.
The museum is housed in a building erected in 1875 by the wicker basket maker Hermann Löbbel, which the town later moved to its present location. It opened on May 14, 1985. It stands on the grounds of Hof Deitmar, the last surviving of the four original farms of the old village, where a small museum island with several buildings now exists.
The exhibition leads through the kitchen and Sunday living room, the workshop and the work steps, from the willow harvest and splitting to the range, trade and use of the wanne on the farm. Furnished rooms show how the residents lived and worked.
