Om museet

The Heimathaus in Borghorst is the town's former town hall. The Münster architect Anton Nordhoff designed it in 1887; originally the post office and the administration each occupied one of the two wings. The floor plan imitates the Prussian imperial eagle, and the baroque tower cap is a replica of the cap of the demolished old collegiate church.

After Borghorst and Burgsteinfurt merged into the town of Steinfurt, a new town hall was built. The old building went to the Heimatverein in 1982, which furnished it with a great deal of volunteer work. The association deliberately did not want a conventional museum, but a place to meet, with exhibitions, Low German evenings, and lectures. The former council chamber serves as an event room and wedding room.

The tour leads through a mayor's office with portraits and a display case of costume dolls and local history books, to a "Tante-Emma-Laden" (corner shop), a spinning and weaving room that recalls Borghorst as a town of cloth makers, and a recreated bedroom. In the attic, a threshing floor with farm equipment and rooms for a seamstress, a shoemaker, a school class, and a pharmacy show earlier life. A memorial book in the council chamber lists the fallen and missing of World War II from Borghorst.
