Om museet
The Renaissance house in Weißenfels's old town was built around the middle of the 16th century. In 1651 the composer Heinrich Schütz acquired the building and lived here until around 1670/71 before returning to Dresden; important late works were written during these final years. It is the only surviving residence of the musician.
The town archivist Adolf Schmiedecke set up a first small memorial exhibition in 1956. For the composer's 400th birthday in the mid-1980s, the house was elaborately restored and opened as a music memorial site, followed in 1994 by a newly conceived permanent exhibition. In 2006 the federal government recognized the house as a cultural monument of national importance; after a comprehensive restoration it reopened in 2012 with an interactive exhibition on three floors.
The focus is on the life and late work of Schütz as well as the musical history of Weißenfels. Exhibits include the reconstructed composing room with music fragments found in the house. Since April 2026 the house has been closed for an extension and renovation project (around €5.9 million) that will add step-free access, an elevator and a special exhibition room; the reopening with a new permanent exhibition is planned for 2029. Until then, concerts, lectures and small cabinet exhibitions are being held at other venues in town.
