This cabinet exhibition in the wine museum shows historic bottle labels for the first time, mainly from regional winemakers, including a label from the Freyburg sparkling-wine factory that is around 170 years old.
The Neuenburg was founded around 1090 by Ludwig der Springer and in the High Middle Ages grew into the largest castle of the Ludowingian Landgraves of Thuringia – a secular counterpart to nearby Naumburg Cathedral. The double chapel with its extraordinary architectural ornamentation was built around 1180, and the mighty keep known as "Dicker Wilhelm" (Fat William) also dates from the 12th century. Among the castle's prominent residents was St. Elisabeth of Thuringia.
After the Ludowingian line died out in 1247, the castle passed to the House of Wettin. From around 1440, Duke Wilhelm III had it remodeled in the Late Gothic style; from 1656 to 1746 it served the Dukes of Saxe-Weissenfels and later the Saxon Elector as a hunting lodge. By the 19th century the castle was already a popular destination for day-trippers.
A first museum opened in 1935. From 1970 to 1989 the castle was closed and fell increasingly into disrepair; after German reunification it was comprehensively restored and reopened. Today the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt manages the site on the Romanesque Road (Straße der Romanik). The museum presents the history of the castle and the landgraviate, the only wine museum in Saxony-Anhalt, a clock collection with timepieces from four centuries and changing special exhibitions, some of them in the keep.
