Om museet

After the death of her husband, the pastor Carl Ludwig Nietzsche, Franziska Nietzsche moved with her children Friedrich and Elisabeth from Röcken to Naumburg in 1850. Friedrich attended elementary school and the Domgymnasium (cathedral high school) here; even as a pupil at Schulpforta and later as a student and professor, the town remained his home, to which he regularly returned.

From 1858 the family lived in the house at Weingarten 18, where his mother lived until her death in 1897. After his breakdown in 1889, Nietzsche was cared for by her here. In 1893 his sister Elisabeth set up the first Nietzsche Archive on the ground floor, which she later moved to Weimar.

The house opened as a museum in 1994. It is run by the Friedrich-Nietzsche-Stiftung, which also operates the neighboring Nietzsche-Dokumentationszentrum, a modern new building with archive, library, and event spaces, built by the town of Naumburg following an international architecture competition.

For its 30th anniversary, the museum received the new permanent exhibition "1, 2, 3 … Nietzsche". Instead of original furniture and memorabilia, it relies on objects, wall drawings, and sound: behind each exhibit is a quotation, and five audio tracks guide visitors through Nietzsche's life, his animals, things, and concepts, plus a dedicated children's track. The focus thus shifted from biography to the questions raised by his philosophy.
