Markgräfliches Opernhaus
Margravine Wilhelmine's Baroque court theater in Bayreuth – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a magnificent wooden auditorium and an interactive museum next door.
Om museet
Margravine Wilhelmine, sister of Frederick the Great, wanted to make Bayreuth a center of the arts. The occasion for building a new court theater was the wedding of her only daughter, Elisabeth Friederike Sophie, to Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg. Starting in 1746, a freestanding building went up next to the existing Redoutenhaus; its interior was designed by the Italian theater architects Giuseppe Galli Bibiena and his son Carlo. The house was inaugurated with two opera performances for the wedding in 1748. Court architect Joseph Saint-Pierre added the stone facade by 1750.
The auditorium with its tiers of boxes is a prefabricated wooden structure set into the masonry shell and covered with illusionistic painting on wood and canvas. A roof truss without supports spans the space, and the stage was one of the largest of its time. Because Bayreuth lost importance after the era of the margraves, the theater survived almost unchanged. In 1871 its large stage drew Richard Wagner to Bayreuth, although he then decided to build a Festspielhaus of his own.
The opera house has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. After a restoration lasting several years, in which the paintwork, technical systems and fire protection were renewed, it reopened to the public in 2018. In April 2023, the Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung (Bavarian Palace Administration) opened a World Heritage information center in the neighboring Redoutenhaus, with an interactive, inclusively designed museum on Baroque festival and theater culture. Between May and October, the house continues to serve as a venue for concerts and operas, including the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival.
