Om museet

The core is the collection assembled from the 1970s onward by Henkel heiress Anette Brandhorst and her husband Udo Brandhorst. In 1993 they placed the works in a foundation. After Anette Brandhorst's death in 1999, Udo Brandhorst looked for a partner for a museum of its own and found one in the Free State of Bavaria: the state constructed the building and covers its operation, while the Udo und Anette Brandhorst Stiftung funds ongoing acquisitions from its capital.

The building by the Berlin firm Sauerbruch Hutton was erected on the site of the former Türkenkaserne (Türken barracks) right next to the Pinakothek der Moderne. Its trademark is the facade of around 36,000 colored glazed ceramic rods in 23 shades, which also dampens street noise. The museum opened in May 2009 as part of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections).

The entire upper floor is devoted to Cy Twombly; a dedicated polygonal gallery was built for his twelve-part Lepanto cycle, along with the Rose Room. With more than 120 works, the museum also holds the largest Warhol collection outside the US. Other focal points are groups of works by Keith Haring, Alex Katz, Mike Kelley, Louise Lawler, Kara Walker and others.

Since the opening the holdings have tripled to more than 2,000 works, and in 2021 the Eva Felten Photo Collection with around 450 works was added. In addition to collection presentations and major solo exhibitions, the museum runs the “Factory,” an education program for children, teens and families.
