Romanisches Haus Bad Kösen
Museum in one of the oldest stone buildings in central Germany: local history of Bad Kösen, Käthe Kruse dolls, and East German PEBE construction kits.
Om museet
The Romanisches Haus (Romanesque House) belonged to a farm estate that Bishop Udo I of Naumburg transferred in 1138 to the newly founded Cistercian monastery of Schulpforte. The long building of shell limestone ashlar was built between 1150 and 1175 and for centuries served the monastery, and later the Landesschule Pforta boarding school, as a stable, storehouse, and living quarters. It is considered one of the oldest surviving stone buildings of a monastic outlying farm in central Germany and is a stop on the Romanesque Road (Straße der Romanik).
After 1950, the town of Bad Kösen took over the building, which was initially used as a coal store. An intermediate floor was added for museum use; on July 10, 1955, the town museum opened on the first floor, with the upper floor following two years later.
Since 1993, a permanent exhibition in the neighboring former sheep barn has commemorated doll maker Käthe Kruse, who ran her workshops in Bad Kösen from 1912 to 1950. It is based on the collection of Goslar collector Wally Lüer; the holdings now include more than 270 dolls and rank among the largest Käthe Kruse collections in Germany. There is also an exhibition on the Kösen toy factory PEBE, which made plastic interlocking construction kits in East German times. Since Bad Kösen was incorporated into Naumburg in 2010, the museum has been part of the Stadtmuseum Naumburg.
