Schloss Linderhof
King Ludwig II's only completed palace, in the Graswang Valley near Ettal: a Neo-Rococo villa with the Venus Grotto and park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2025.
Om museet
The old Linderhof, an estate whose modest forester's lodge King Maximilian II already used as hunting quarters, lay in the Graswang Valley (Graswangtal) near Ettal. His son Ludwig II acquired the estate in 1869 and first had the small house remodeled for himself. Grander plans for a second Versailles or a Byzantine palace were abandoned. Instead, under court architect Georg Dollmann, a small royal villa grew out of wooden extensions over several construction phases and was encased in masonry from 1873; the old royal lodge (Königshäuschen) was moved to its present spot in the park in 1874.
Linderhof is the only one of Ludwig II's larger palaces that he saw completed, and also the one where he stayed most often. Behind the Baroque-style facade, the rooms unfold a lavish Neo-Rococo modeled on the era of Louis XV. From 1884, the king had the bedroom greatly enlarged once again; when he died in 1886, the remodeled room had not been fully furnished.
In the 1870s, court garden director Carl von Effner combined Baroque terraces and water parterres with a landscape park in the Ammergau Alps. Within it lie imaginative buildings such as the artificial Venus Grotto (1875–1877), whose stage set recreates the first act of Wagner's “Tannhäuser” and which was lit with colored electric light at an early date, as well as the Moorish Kiosk, the Moroccan House and Hunding's Hut.
Linderhof opened to visitors as early as August 1, 1886, just weeks after the king's death. The complex has belonged to the Free State of Bavaria since 1918. After a ten-year restoration, the Venus Grotto has been accessible again since April 2025; in the same year, Linderhof became a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee and the King's House on Schachen.
