About the museum
The museum is located in the former Schüttkasten (granary) in the grounds of Vösendorf Castle. The building is associated with the agricultural reformer Peter Jordan, who managed the estates of Vösendorf and Laxenburg from 1806, and with the architect Louis Joseph Montoyer, who took charge of planning the granary. In the 20th century the building served various purposes, most recently as the storage space of a second-hand dealer.
The Krippen-Verein Vösendorf (nativity scene association) moved into the building in September 2003 as its clubhouse and workshop; the official opening followed on 24 October 2003. To do so, members first had to clear out hundreds of cubic metres of bulky waste and renovate the roof, windows and building services. Across three floors, about 730 square metres are available, including workshops for nativity scene building and carving. On 18 November 2004, the 1st Lower Austrian Nativity Scene Museum was ceremonially opened.
The tour leads from traditional Tyrolean nativity scenes to Oriental depictions of the Christmas story; works by renowned nativity scene makers are shown. The exhibitions are deliberately not permanent but are renewed every year with different nativity scenes and related objects. The museum also offers nativity scene building courses.
