About the museum

The house in the Danube meadows in Klosterneuburg was built by the collector couple Agnes and Karlheinz Essl to plans by the architect Heinz Tesar. As the Essl Museum, from 1999 it showed the private collection of contemporary art that had grown over decades; from the start the building was both an exhibition venue and an art depot, with a bright oval hall and surrounding galleries.

After financial difficulties at the family's company, the Essl Museum closed in 2016. In spring 2017 the Essl Collection, comprising around 6,000 works, went to the Albertina in Vienna on permanent loan; the Albertina later also took over the building and received the collection as a donation in 2018.

In April 2024 the Albertina opened the house as its third venue, alongside the Palais on Albertinaplatz and the Albertina Modern in the Künstlerhaus. Klosterneuburg shows works of contemporary art that are not currently on display or on loan in Vienna. One focus is sculpture, for example by Franz West, Erwin Wurm, Jonathan Meese and Marc Quinn, complemented by drawings and watercolours. The museum is open seasonally from spring to autumn, Thursday to Sunday.
