About the museum
The wish for a municipal museum in Klosterneuburg goes back to the 1890s. In 1931 the collection was shown to the public for the first time, in the building of the savings bank. After the town was incorporated into Vienna in 1938, the holdings went to the Vienna Historical Museum; in 1974 the museum was reestablished in the Rostockvilla, but it closed again in 1990 after the death of its director.
On June 18, 1998, the city museum opened in the newly built Steinhäusl cultural center on the Kardinal-Piffl-Platz. Excavations for the building uncovered walls of a medieval Lesehof (a monastic wine estate) and more than 1,200 decorated floor tiles from the 14th century, which are now part of the museum.
The collection ranges from Roman finds, through a growing art collection with views and works by local artists, to folk-life objects. The permanent exhibition "Es war einmal …" ("Once upon a time …") was designed in 2008 together with pupils of the Anton-Bruckner-Schule; after renovation, including a new air-conditioning system, it has been on view again in revised form since October 2016. In 2024 the museum received the Austrian Museum Quality Seal.
