About the museum
In 1908 and 1909 the municipality of Berndorf built two school buildings on either side of the Margaretenkirche, one for boys and one for girls. The interior was financed and designed by the industrialist Arthur Krupp, whose metalware factory shaped the town. He wanted to put history and art directly before the eyes of his workers' children, and so had each classroom painted and furnished in a different historic architectural style. The opening took place in December 1909.
The journey through time runs from ancient Egypt through Doric, Pompeian, Byzantine and Moorish rooms to Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, the style of Louis XIV and Empire. Ceilings, murals, doorways and furniture draw on models from all over Europe and the Mediterranean. The decoration is largely the same in both buildings but differs in the details of the motifs; the Rococo room, once the girls' needlework room, exists only in the building that is now the primary school.
Krupp also provided health facilities: the girls' school housed the first school dental clinic in the Monarchy, and both buildings received shower and foot baths. Classes are still taught in the style classrooms today: the former boys' school is the secondary school, the girls' school the primary school. Outside teaching hours the municipality opens the rooms to visitors and offers guided tours, also combined with the krupp stadt museum and the Stadttheater.
