About the museum
The impetus for the museum came from Wolfgang Stiawa of Weissenbach, who at the end of 1986 showed his private postcard collection and products of the valley's factories at the local Raiffeisenkasse. The great interest gave him the idea of creating something lasting. The municipality provided the old primary school, built in 1901, and the dentist Kurt Mühmler gave the project his complete dental practice including laboratory. The museum was inaugurated on 26 October 1987, and the supporting association was founded in January 1988.
In the following years the museum grew: after the roof was renovated and the façade restored, two large rooms were added in 1991, and the industry room opened in 1992. Today eight rooms with around 10,000 exhibits present the local history of the twelve municipalities of the Triesting Valley.
The focus is on the industrial age, which began in 1697 with the Neuhaus mirror factory; 34 factories are presented, as well as well-known personalities of the valley such as Theodor Eduard Suess, the inventor of the LD steel process. In addition there are crafts and trades, the dental practice from around 1900, agriculture and forestry, wildlife, minerals and 71 types of wood.
