About the museum
The idea for the museum came from the Kalladorf farmer Leopold Stadler, who founded the Kulturverein Bauernmuseum Kalladorf together with Helmut Wunderl in 1979. In more than 3,300 hours of voluntary work, members and helpers – including pupils from the HTL technical school and the Hollabrunn agricultural school, as well as local young people – collected and restored equipment. On October 17, 1982, the collection was opened to the public for the first time.
The museum is housed in a brick barn built around 1900, which Stadler made available. It formerly served farming operations, including a large steam threshing machine, and in 1945 provided emergency shelter for about 20 families from Transylvania. After the roof and floor were renovated, financed mainly through the association's annual potato festival, donations and provincial grants, the building reopened on October 17, 2005.
On three levels and roughly 380 m², the exhibition shows the development of agriculture in the Hollabrunn region between about 1900 and 1970: simple tools for tilling the soil, threshing and harvesting machines, sickles, sheaf binders and horse-drawn wagons. There are also historic tractors, household items, an original grocery shop interior and a section on viticulture.
