About the museum
The Pulkautal Wine-Growing Museum belongs to the Untermarkersdorf wine-growers' association and was set up to preserve the history of viticulture and cellar economy in the region. It was officially opened on May 3, 1987, and is housed in an old farmhouse, or press house, on the Untermarkersdorf Kellertrift in the northern Weinviertel, which was restored with great effort.
The collection covers the entire value chain: from tending the vineyards, through processing the grapes, to storing the wine. On display are, among other things, an old wine press, barrels, a complete set of cooper's tools, and views of the village and the Kellertrift around 1900. The guided tours also convey cultural-historical background and tell of notable weather events of past centuries.
The museum is closely linked to the village's two Kellergassen (cellar lanes), whose press houses and cellar tunnels dug into the loess were used for winemaking and storage, and in some cases still are. Museum director Alexander Gröschl therefore offers combined tours with a cellar-lane walk, a cellar visit and a wine tasting. A museum festival is held every year in late summer.
