About the museum
The Marktamtsmuseum tells the story of Vienna's markets and of the city's market supervision (MA 59). Until 1969 there was a Marktamtsmuseum in the Vienna City Hall. When the Market Office moved to the 3rd district, the museum moved with it. For lack of space it was later closed and its collection put into storage.
In 2012 the museum reopened after more than four decades, this time directly at the Floridsdorfer Markt. Spread over eight rooms, around 2,200 objects are arranged chronologically, from photographs and tools to historic scales and a price report book from 1848, and on to food models and hazardous household items that were once flagged by food inspectors.
The tours lead from the beginnings to 1913, through the years 1914 to 1955, including the Nazi era, and up to the present day. Since 2024 the Naschmarktmuseum has also belonged to the Marktamtsmuseum as a satellite branch.
