About the museum
The First Austrian Museum of Horticulture was founded in 1968/69. Since 2003 it has been housed in the former orangery of the Kagran school garden in Vienna's 22nd district, a building dating back to 1912. It is run by the Wiener Stadtgärten (MA 42).
About 500 square meters show a selection from a collection of more than 40,000 objects. It ranges from photos and plans to tools, garden and nursery equipment, and vehicles, and is considered the largest collection on the history of Austrian horticulture and allotment gardening. On display are, among others, pieces from the former Rothschild gardens, as well as themed areas such as vegetable growing, ornamental plant cultivation, nursery management and green-space design.
In 2001 the floristry collection of Christian Sädtler from the former Österreichisches Blumenbindemuseum (Austrian Flower Binding Museum) was added. It includes more than 470 wall vases from 1900 to 1970 and 540 metal stamping dies for making artificial flowers. A flower shop from Schwarzenbergstraße in the 1st district, one of the last from the Historicism era, was rebuilt as an ensemble.
