About the museum
The Floridsdorf district museum goes back to an initiative by Josef Tomschik in 1933; a museum association followed in 1934, and from 1935 the collections were on display in an old school building. After the Second World War, the museum finally found space on the first floor of the so-called Mautner-Schlössl at Prager Straße 33.
Georg Heinrich von Mautner Markhof had the villa built in 1900 for his son Georg Anton, who moved in in 1901/02. Originally built in the Secessionist style with a flat roof, it was given a Baroque makeover after the father's death and received its present hipped roof – hence the popular name "Schlössl" (little castle). After the Second World War, the City of Vienna bought the house and initially used it as a replacement for the bombed-out district office.
The permanent exhibition tells the history of the 21st district with a particular focus on the labour movement and everyday life. A memorial room commemorates Franz Jonas, who came from Floridsdorf and was Mayor of Vienna and Federal President. Separate rooms are devoted to Ludwig van Beethoven, who was a frequent guest of Countess Erdődy in nearby Jedlesee; they are looked after by the Association of Friends of the Beethoven Memorial in Floridsdorf and display, among other things, a lock of the composer's hair. Concerts are also held regularly in the house.
