About the museum
The poet Josef Weinheber (1892–1945) bought a country house in Kirchstetten in 1936 and moved in in the summer of 1937. From spring to autumn he lived and worked here; many of his well-known works were written in Kirchstetten, often with direct reference to the countryside and its people. After his death in 1945 he was buried in the garden of the house.
The house and garden still belong to the family: Weinheber's son Christian Weinheber-Janota lives there with his family. Four rooms in which the poet lived and worked remain unchanged and display mementos such as paintings, busts and photographs. The family guides visitors through the rooms by appointment; the grave in the garden can also be seen.
As a lyric poet, Weinheber was widely read in his day, but he is considered controversial because of his proximity to the Nazi regime. The house sells audio recordings, postcards, books and yearbooks. About five minutes' walk away are the memorial rooms for the English poet W. H. Auden.
