About the museum
The museum was set up in 2005 by the Klausen-Leopoldsdorf village renewal association and has been run by volunteers ever since. With models, objects, documents and pictures, it documents how the Wienerwald was used over the centuries.
The focus is on log floating: in 1667, under Emperor Leopold I, the floating system was built in the previously uninhabited basin of Klausen-Leopoldsdorf; it eventually comprised 14 dams. It operated for 272 years and carried a total of about 10 million cubic metres of firewood by water power to the catch rack in Baden. From there it went by cart and, from 1803, also on the Wiener Neustadt Canal to Vienna. The last log drive took place in 1939.
Next to the museum stands the Schöpflklause, built in 1742, which was completely renovated in 2010 and now serves as a retention basin for flood protection. Historical films about the log drive complement the exhibition; the museum guides also explain the adjoining core zone of the Wienerwald Biosphere Park.
