About the museum
The men's Servite monastery on the Maria-Theresien-Straße goes back to Anna Caterina Gonzaga, the second wife of the Tyrolean sovereign Archduke Ferdinand II. The widow founded the monastery and church in 1614, having previously endowed a double monastery for women. The Servite monastery is the only one of the three that still exists today.
The monastery houses the Kunstkammer (art chamber), which was set up by the monument preservation authorities in 1957. It was completely renovated in 1998 and made publicly accessible again in cooperation with the state's cultural department and the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum. The high rooms, with paintings hung symmetrically, convey the classic image of a monastic museum.
The centrepiece is the painted Rococo furniture from the monastery's former natural-science cabinet. In addition there are paintings and prints, sculpture, liturgical objects, furniture, a coin collection and a collection of relics. The core comes from the founder's personal possessions, including shoes, a travelling desk, a travel chest and a blue glass bowl from her time at the Tyrolean court.
