About the museum

The Taxispalais, a Baroque city palace on Innsbruck's Maria-Theresien-Straße, was already used for exhibitions at times in the early 20th century. In 1964 the State of Tyrol set up the “Galerie im Taxispalais” on the ground floor as an exhibition house for current art with a program reaching beyond the region.

From 1998 to 1999 the building was remodeled and expanded; an additional hall was created beneath the inner courtyard, and the exhibition space grew to about 500 square meters. The gallery then received artistic leadership for the first time and concentrated on contemporary art. Since 2017 Nina Tabassomi has led the house, which was renamed “Taxispalais – Kunsthalle Tirol” in the same year.

The Kunsthalle has no permanent collection; it shows changing exhibitions several times a year, accompanied by guided tours, talks, workshops for children and a reading area with art magazines. The operator is Taxispalais Kunsthalle Tirol GmbH, a subsidiary of the Tiroler Landesmuseen-Betriebsgesellschaft (Tyrolean State Museums operating company).
