About the museum

The Dorfmuseum Mönchhof grew out of the private collection of Josef Haubenwallner and has existed as an open-air museum since 1990. Over decades the Haubenwallner family gathered houses, furnishings and tools from the Seewinkel; many of the buildings originally stood in Mönchhof and were rebuilt on the grounds, the family’s former vineyard. In 2002 the museum received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.

The site is divided into three areas. The first shows what the people of the Heideboden lived from – cultivation, harvest and working tools – while the second is devoted to storing provisions for their own needs. Behind a pond lies a reconstructed village with a school, inn, grocery shop, cinema, municipal office, post office, fire station, dairy, mill, craftsmen’s workshops and church. A winegrower’s farm and a baker’s house illustrate the part-time farming typical of the region.

Opposite the museum grounds, the former Mönchhof railway station belongs to the museum as a branch. An exhibition in the station building, three historic carriages and a rebuilt storehouse tell of the Neusiedler Seebahn, the narrow-gauge railways of the estates and the expulsion of the Danube Swabians (Ungarndeutsche) in 1945. The houses can be entered; visitors can stop for a meal at the museum inn.
