About the museum
Erwin Moser was born in Vienna in 1954 and grew up in Burgenland; his parents were winegrowers in Gols on Lake Neusiedl. After an apprenticeship as a typesetter, he worked as a freelance draftsman and painter and found his way into children's literature through the publisher Beltz & Gelberg. Until his death in 2017 he produced more than one hundred books, including picture books, novels and fable collections, which have been translated into over 20 languages. Burgenland landscapes and childhood impressions appear in them again and again.
In 2014 his home municipality of Gols dedicated the Erwin Moser Museum to him. It is located in the historic setting of the WeinKulturHaus on the Hauptplatz, which houses the Golser Ortsvinothek (local wine tasting room) and the tourist information office. Moser's art has found a permanent home there: three exhibition rooms show around 70 pictures, the "Alte Stube" holds illustrations and sketches, the "Rauchküche" holds pictures of dwellings, tree houses and caves, and the upper room displays Burgenland landscapes, still lifes and early graphic works.
The exhibition changes its theme every year; for 2026 the bear motif is in focus. Six display cases show translations of his books as well as the handwritten manuscript of the novel "Jenseits der großen Sümpfe" from 1979. Illustrations, sketches and posters are also on display in the neighboring municipal library. The museum can be visited free of charge during the opening hours of the WeinKulturHaus and is looked after artistically by Ruth Moser.
