About the museum
The museum goes back to the private collection of the Klagenfurt musician and teacher Gert Prix, who founded it in 1987. It is regarded as the first independent museum devoted entirely to electronic keyboard instruments. It initially operated under the name Keyboardmuseum; since 1 January 2003 it has been called EBOARDMUSEUM, to set itself clearly apart from acoustic pianos, accordions and portable home keyboards.
After several moves, the collection found its present home in 2007 in a hall on the south side of the Klagenfurt exhibition grounds. On around 2,000 square metres there are about 2,000 exhibits: Hammond organs from the very first Hammond A onwards, synthesizers, electric pianos, Mellotrons, string ensembles, samplers, drum machines, Leslie cabinets, amplifiers and effects units. These also include instruments that well-known musicians played on stage themselves.
Unlike in most instrument museums, guests are allowed to play the instruments, try them out and photograph them; those who do not play themselves can have the team demonstrate the instruments. The museum is run by the association EBOARDMUSEUM. In 2010 it received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality. In a dedicated concert area, concerts, readings and cabaret evenings take place regularly.
