About the museum

The cinema museum goes back to a media project by the University of Oldenburg in the 1990s that researched the beginnings of cinema in Klagenfurt; since 1997 a website has documented this history. In 2007 the first exhibition opened in the former ORF medium-wave transmitter on the Lend Canal, and the city transport museum was later added in the same premises.

Today both museums share the building and a joint admission ticket. The cinema museum tells the history of film since 1896, from the first travelling cinemas and the oldest film shot in Carinthia to the many Klagenfurt cinemas and more than 50 rural cinemas. A dedicated room is devoted to amateur film from 16 mm to Super 8, and in the cinema hall historical film documents are shown on old 35 mm projectors.

The city transport museum shows the development of public transport in Klagenfurt and on the Wörthersee. In summer, the historic Lendcanaltramway departs from here; the ride is included in the admission price. The museum is run by the association Nostalgiebahnen in Kärnten.
