About the museum

The museum is located in the house built in 1867 at Bahnhofstraße 50 in Klagenfurt, where Robert Musil was born on 6 November 1880. The building belongs to the City of Klagenfurt, which had it converted into a literature centre in 1996/97, also home to the Robert Musil Institute for Literary Research of the University of Klagenfurt. The museum is run by the city's cultural department.

The exhibitions were conceived by Heimo Strempfl and designed by Franz Freytag. The Musil show "Ins Ungewisse hinsteuern" (Steering into the Unknown) traces the poet's life stages with original objects, documents, photos and first editions, deliberately without recreated living situations, since Musil lived in Klagenfurt for barely a year.

In addition there is a reconstruction of the living and working room of the poet Christine Lavant made from original furniture, and a Bachmann room, announced at the portal by a large portrait by the street artist Jef Aérosol. Admission has been free since 1 January 2024. A literature lounge invites visitors to read.
