About the museum

The Bachmann family moved in 1933 into the terraced house on Henselstraße in Klagenfurt, which is part of the Papageno-Siedlung garden estate. Ingeborg Bachmann (1926–1973) spent most of her childhood and youth here; the house also appears in her literary texts. After her death in Rome in 1973, furniture, paintings, clothing, jewellery, writing utensils and a large private library remained in the family home.

In 2021 the City of Klagenfurt and the State of Carinthia acquired the building, supported by the Kärnten Privatstiftung and in coordination with the Bachmann family. It was renovated at a cost of millions and converted into a museum; a rear extension serves as the visitor entrance and ticket area. The library went to the University of Klagenfurt as a permanent loan.

The museum is operated by the Landesmuseum für Kärnten (kärnten.museum) and opened on 27 June 2025. On the ground floor, a tour leads through her childhood and origins; the upper rooms deal with her work and her working methods.
