About the museum

The building on Theatergasse was constructed between 1780 and 1784 as a hospital and served that purpose until 1895. Afterwards it was, among other things, barracks, prison, nursing home and hospital, and the city's first childcare facility. In the early 1990s the complex was in poor condition and the city wanted to create a new cultural centre here; conversion began in autumn 1993.

In 1996 the Stadtgalerie and a music school opened. The gallery is run by the cultural department of the provincial capital Klagenfurt and shows painting, sculpture, photography and new media in rotation in its main rooms of around 1,000 square metres: classics of modernism as well as young positions and themed exhibitions.

The house also includes the Living Studio (since 2007, free admission, mainly for young art), the Alpen-Adria-Galerie in the nearby Stadthaus and the theatergalerie, which has existed since 2022, with the permanent exhibition "Das große Welttheater" by the artist Burgis Paier.

Permanent exhibition

• Das große Welttheater – Burgis Paier – Group of figures by the late Klagenfurt artist as the centrepiece of the theatergalerie; changing presentations on the theme of theatre enter into dialogue with it.

The Stadtgalerie is located in Klagenfurt's city centre between Theaterplatz and Heuplatz; the Alpen-Adria-Galerie in the Stadthaus is about a five-minute walk away.
