About the museum

The centre goes back to the physicist and writer Peter Maria Schuster, who founded the association echophysics in 2009. From November 2009 the municipality of Pöllau has leased exhibition rooms in Pöllau Castle to the association on a long-term basis; in 2010 the first European centre for the history of physics was opened there, together with the research and memorial site for the Styrian Nobel laureate in physics Victor Franz Hess. The association is supported in spirit by the Victor-Franz-Hess-Gesellschaft and the European Physical Society.

The house aims to make European physics history and the life stories of physicists tangible, starting from a focus on Austria and Styria. A permanent exhibition shows historically valuable physical instruments, complemented by documents, images, films and estates as well as demonstrations of important experiments.

Among the highlights are the instruments with which Victor Hess detected cosmic radiation during balloon flights in 1912, as well as collections of discharge tubes and spark inductors, objects relating to Josef Stefan and Christian Doppler, and a room on electricity and electromagnetism. A stellarator coil is displayed in the castle courtyard, and a Foucault pendulum hangs in the Pöllau parish church. The association also organises lectures and specialist conferences.
