About the museum

The building at Herrengasse 6 is first mentioned in documents in August 1406 and received its name in 1412 from its then owner Seifried Steinpeiß. The written name "Stainpeishaus", however, only appears in documents from 1530. The former Hartberg manor house has housed the Museum Hartberg since October 6, 1988.

The museum is run by volunteers from the Historischer Verein Hartberg (Historical Society of Hartberg). The permanent exhibition begins in a furnished classroom that was actually in use in the mid-20th century and leads from there through the 20th century. The history of town and region is then unrolled backward: war and military history, including the struggle against the Turks and the Kuruzzen (Hungarian rebels), social and legal history from the Middle Ages and early modern period, as well as Roman times, the settlement of the Ringkogel, and finds from the Metal Ages and the Stone Age.

A modern extension forms an ensemble with the historic manor house and an inner courtyard; there the museum shows temporary exhibitions. The association also publishes the book series "Steinpeißer" and offers city and special tours.
