About the museum
Schloss Aichberg came into being as part of a belt of castles built along the Lafnitz on the border with Hungary at the end of the 12th century. In 1250 Konrad von Aichberg is the first bearer of the name to be mentioned; in 1378 Wulfing von Aichberg had the stone castle chapel built, today's parish church. In 1412 the lordship passed to Seyfried Steinpeiß, whose family held it until 1772 and expanded the fortress into a palace in the 17th century; tradition dates the present state of the building to 1669.
Repeated invasions, plundering and debt weakened the lordship. In the 19th century the owners changed rapidly – in 1817 the castle was even raffled off in a lottery – later it belonged to the Wimpffen family, then to the Greek prince Ypsilanti. In the First World War refugees from Galicia were quartered here, in the Second World War it served the civilian population and the Wehrmacht, after which it fell increasingly into disrepair.
Since 1986 the castle has been privately owned and has been restored. The present owner, Cajetan Gril, according to the house the 54th owner, set up a “Museum in Progress”, the first part of which opened in 1998 and was expanded in the following years. The permanent exhibition “A House and Its Inhabitants” tells the history of the castle in the context of world events by means of individual original objects and combines it with contemporary art. The house is part of the Schlösserstraße (Castle Road) in Eastern Styria.
