About the museum
The Kulm-Keltendorf is the first prehistoric open-air museum in Styria. It was founded in 1986 by the Society for Early and Protohistory, Region Kulm, and since 2000 it has stood at its present location in Pischelsdorf am Kulm. Several municipalities of the Kulm region support the museum as sponsoring municipalities.
The reason is the long settlement of the nearby Kulmberg (975 m). Excavations revealed traces from the Stone-Copper Age, the Late Bronze Age and the La Tène period, when a Celtic hilltop settlement (oppidum) stood on the summit. In 1999, ten houses were reconstructed in the museum village based on these findings and brought to life with life-size figures. They show residential houses, storehouses, a bake house, a smithy and demonstration huts on food and warfare, and span more than 4,000 years.
In addition there are replicas such as a cult mound, an earth grave, a sacrificial table and a kiln for metalworking. The museum offers guided tours in German and English, hands-on days on traditional crafts, school programs with bread baking in a clay oven, and a full-moon concert in July. The museum has received several Styrian awards for its work.
