About the museum
The roots of the museum go back to 1984, when a teacher began building a local history museum in the local fire station. Since 1991 there has been a dedicated museum management that systematically expands the museum; in 1995 a museum association joined as a supporter.
In 1999 the collection moved into the former municipal lock-up, the Fronfeste, on the Hauptstraße. The building formerly served as the market town's jail; the cells and the practice of the old jurisdiction remain a theme of the museum to this day.
In terms of content, the museum combines regional history with current social questions. Its focus areas are the Romans in the surroundings of Iuvavum (finds from excavations around Neumarkt), the market town's jurisdiction, and the working world of historical trades such as hatters, tanners and pouch makers, which visitors can experience hands-on. Changing annual exhibitions also incorporate contemporary art.
In the street-facing rooms the museum has run the Kramerey since 2020, a shop with regional and handmade products including a café. There are also workshops, school and holiday programmes and outdoor stations around the town.
