About the museum
The museum is housed in a historic timber house in Perwang am Grabensee that once served as a customs station on the border with the Prince-Archbishopric of Salzburg. After the Innviertel came to Austria, the customs border ran here from 1779 to 1809; smugglers were held in the house until their case had been settled in court. The building is a listed monument.
The core of the collection consists of objects from customs history such as uniforms, customs cash boxes, maps and documents, including the Raffelstetten Customs Ordinance of 904. The exhibition sheds light on the daily life of customs officers between 1779 and 1809, the toll and customs system of the Habsburg era, customs history after the First World War and the consequences of the Schengen Agreement.
In addition, a local history exhibition shows craft tools and everyday objects; in the “Brechelbad” the steps of flax production and processing are presented. The Emperor’s Room recalls the stay of Emperor Joseph II on 28 October 1779 in the newly acquired Innviertel, and a natural history exhibition presents animals and plants of the surrounding area, with interactive quiz stations. The museum is run by the municipality of Perwang am Grabensee.
