About the museum
The Literaturhaus is located in the birthplace of the writer Johannes Freumbichler, the grandfather of Thomas Bernhard. The roughly 300-year-old smallholder's house was acquired by the municipality of Henndorf under Mayor Franz Winklhofer, which had it renovated in period style in 2009 according to the requirements of the monuments office.
Since 2012 the association “Literaturhaus Henndorf” has used the building for a varied cultural programme. It includes readings, Literatur.Frühstücke (literary breakfasts) with regional authors, writing workshops, the exhibition series “Bild & Wort” with contemporary art, workshops for children and young people under the title “Altes Haus & Junge Leute” (Old House & Young People) and Literatur.Spaziergänge (literary walks) through the village.
Henndorf is regarded as a literary village: Carl Zuckmayer lived here from 1926 to 1938, Ödön von Horváth wrote “Jugend ohne Gott” in Henndorf, Franz Stelzhamer spent his last years in the village, and Thomas Bernhard remained attached to the village all his life. A small museum in the house shows display boards and exhibits on writers and artists with a Henndorf connection, including a writing desk of Freumbichler's, Zuckmayer's tankards and a traditional costume made by Carl Mayr.
