About the museum
The Stiftsmuseum is located in the former provostry of the Collegiate Foundation of Mattsee, which is also called the deanery or residence. Dean Salomon Grarock began construction in the early 17th century, the chapter wing was added around 1700, and the building was completed in the late 18th century to plans by the Salzburg court architect Wolfgang Hagenauer. The twelve stately rooms, some with Rococo stucco and stoves, served the collegiate provosts as official seat and residence until 1972.
The successor in office no longer moved into the rooms, turned them into a cultural centre and planned a museum for the paintings, liturgical implements, vestments and furniture collected since the Baroque period. The Salzburg art historian Johannes Neuhardt took over the planning; in 1977 the Stiftsmuseum opened together with the Stiftskeller.
Today, across about 600 square metres, it displays among other things a treasury with a copy of the Tassilo Chalice, a set table of the canons, a painting gallery, the foundation's library, an astronomical clock from 1704 and a documentation of the exile of the Crown of St Stephen in Mattsee in 1945. Dedicated rooms commemorate the composer and music publisher Anton Diabelli and the surgeon Burghard Breitner. The tour, supervised by volunteers, leads from the Stiftsplatz through the church and cloister to the museum rooms.
