About the museum
The Gumpoldskirchen Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded on 24 July 1869 and is one of the oldest brigades in Lower Austria. Much material from its early years has survived and was sorted, catalogued and restored over many years of work. Since autumn 1994 it has been on display in the first fire station on Kirchenplatz, next to the parish church; the museum was restored in 2023.
On around 100 square metres it presents a cross-section of firefighting from the past to the present day: historic helmets, old firefighting equipment and portable pumps, uniforms, medals, founding charters, searchlights and early alarm systems. Of the roughly 500 objects in the collection, about half are on display.
Particular highlights are the wooden hose tower from the Gründerzeit, in which the delicate hemp hoses were once cared for, and a roadworthy historic Land Rover that was classified with a gold medal by an international fire brigade commission and once helped with rescues in the vineyards.
